Yes, I admit it: I am a crazy cat lady! Here are two of the house-lions:
Painting is one of my favorite hobbies. It doesn’t matter if it is a wall, a real painting with watercolors or furniture -nothing is safe from my paintbrush and I!
I recently discovered the love for chalk paint, men o men why have I not discovered this years ago? Now I can finally beautify all these treasures I find at thrift stores or yard sales. I have always preferred to mix my own colors, because I can never find the color I want. What I do is I look in the “Oops section” at Home Depot or Lowes or at Habitat for Humanity for colors that are kind of what I want and then I mix them at home myself. The only disadvantage is, that if you have used up the whole batch and don’t remember how many parts of what color you used it will be hard to mix that exact color again. So make sure you write down how and which color you have used. The HUGE advantage of course is, that you can save A LOT of money this way.
So after I have mixed my desired color I make chalk paint out of it:
1/3 cup of plaster
1/3 cup of cold water
1 cup of latex paint
Empty paint bucket with lid
First mix the plaster and the cold water in the empty paint bucket until the plaster is fully dissolved.
After it is completely smooth you stir in the paint and tada! You have just made your first chalk paint!
This is what the little table looked like before:
Now you can apply the chalk paint to the furniture in need. I usually put on two coats, but maybe you like the more distressed style so one coat would be enough.
And here is the table after – I love how the paint brings out the detail of the table.
No, it is not whipped cream! It is homemade Shea Whipped Body Butter!
And YES, it is super simple to make! All you need are the following ingredients and a little bit of time.
1/2 cups Ivory Shea Butter
1/4 cup Almond Oil
1/4 Coconut Oil
1 teaspoon White BEESWAX Pellets
A couple drops of Essential Oils (this is optional, but I love the smell of lavender or vanilla on my skin)
Put an empty glass jar into a pot.
Fill the pot (not the glass) with water. You don’t need much maybe half way up to the glass.
Put the Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Beeswax and Almond Oil in the glass.
Set the stove to high heat and melt all the ingredients.
After all the ingredients have melted put in a couple of drops of essential oil.
Pour the melted ingredients into a plastic bowl and let it cool down for about an hour.
After the body butter has cooled down a little whip it with the hand mixer on high for about 5-10 minutes.
Make sure it is really nice and fluffy and scoop it into a nice glass container.
For the last couple of months I have been playing with the thought of raising my own chickens. I love eggs and we eat quite a few every week, unfortunately the store bought ones just don’t cut it. Even the organic ones taste nothing like real fresh eggs plus spending $6 Dollars per dozen is a bit steep. I would buy them from my farmers lady, but since I marketed her awesome farm to so many people – she is always out of them by the time I get there.
As with everything in live I made a list – Pros and Cons of raising your own chicks.
- Farm Fresh eggs!!! The taste is just amazing plus I know what exactly I feed them and know for a fact that there is no junk in the eggs.
- Chicken poop can be used as fertilizer
- When socialized they make great pets and they are way cheaper than cats or dogs plus you get actual food from them
- Good green pest control – when you let your chickens roam they eat every bug, insect and worm they can find – This is definitely my favorite argument!
- You can sell the eggs
- You can also raise them for meat
- They are smelly creatures. If you do not cleaning then this is not the right way for you to get your eggs directly from your backyard.
- Involves hard work raising them until they are ready to lay their first eggs.
- Initial start up cost can be fairly high.
- If you live in a HOA area this can be a problem.
Since the pros outweigh my cons – I will have to talk to my better half to see what he thinks about all this. We have a fairly small yard and there is a busy road right behind our fence – I would hate for them to get hurt.
I will keep you posted on my decision
So you do not like weeds… Well neither do I. But somehow these seem to be the only things that want to grow in my garden. I do not believe in pouring chemicals into my front lawn just to get rid of clovers and dandelions – even though my HOA does not like them. You have two options to go here. You can either kill them with natural remedies or you can use them as tea – more in my next post – Teaxperiment – unwanted weeds in my tea.
So instead of running to the store after you spotted one of those HOA not approved plants – run to your kitchen! Most likely you will find a remedy to remove these unwanted greenlings without poisoning the drinking water. Find the nearest Heinz Distilled White Vinegar 32 oz bottle pour it in a spray bottle (34 ounce) add 1/2 cup of salt and a squirt of dish soap and voila you have an effective weed killer in your hand! Before you spray the weeds you might want to mow your lawn so your natural weed killer will work most effectively. Make sure you DO NOT spray grass or other plants since this solution will kill it all!
Another way to get rid of weeds is to pour the water that you boiled your potatoes, rice or noodles in over the weed – the starch will clog the pores and the weed will die! For a more effective way squirt a little bit of soap in it as well!
I hope you find these two little tips helpful and will use these rather than using chemicals that will eventually be responsible for the destruction of our beautiful planet earth! And remember the less chemicals end up in your body – the easier it will be to become your skinny, beautiful self again!
So today I had the shock of my life when I emptied out my daughters lunch box. As you know I do care a lot about my families health not only to be skinny again… no also because I do not want to eat junk and I want to raise my daughter so she will carry on with this organic life style.
Anyhow – I open my daughters lunch box and she has not eaten her “kinder Schokolade”. kinder Schokolade is the chocolate I grew up with in Germany and my mom sends me some of this yummy stuff in my care packages. It is a little chocolate bar with milk filling in it. I know it is chocolate but everyone needs some good chocolate here and there. So I ask her why she hasn’t eaten what she usually destroys in 5 seconds…. her answer – we cannot eat chocolate at school anymore they want us to eat healthy foods. Well I agree – children should eat healthy food this is why I give my daughter cold lunches so she doesn’t have to eat the junk they cook in the cafeteria.
The reason why I wrote this little story is to show you how little even our school system knows about GMO, nutrition, minerals etc. They tell our children it is not OK to eat a tiny bit of GMO-Free chocolate as a dessert for lunch but they put chicken nuggets, corn dogs , nachos and breaded fish on their plates – not only do all these choices have tons of hidden calories and carbs, no on top of that they contain tons of MSG and are definitely not organic. Well why do you think American kids are obese? Why are European kids so much skinnier – of course we have big kids in Europe but I have never seen as many 10 year olds that all way as much as I do. We as parents need to fight for our kids health! We need to educate them but not only them we also need to educate the teachers, the school districts and the lunch ladies! Why can’t we have gardens in our schools, grow fresh vegetables and fruits for them. This can be a nice school project for all grades and ages. Teach them in Health about really being healthy by choosing organic and GMO-free foods even teach them how to cook. Often times a home cooked meal takes less time than running to the nearest fast food chain.
Why can’t every city take example of Seattle? This city in our beautiful NW includes community gardens in their urban planning! How cool is that? So instead of wasting water to prettify your lawn and big parks they invest in healthy food for their people to help support low income families, minority communities, seniors and everyone else that needs a little extra help! For more information about this topic click here. Seattle’s newest, biggest and coolest project is the Beacon Food Forest – A 7 acre lot full of edible fruits and veggies free to everyone with community play-fields, kids area and much more! Read more about this modern Garden of Eden in this article posted by the modern farmer.
To bring me back to my main thought — We need to do something! We need to educate ourselves better so we can educate others! Start by reading as much material as possible about organic foods, GMO-Free living, Nutrition, Natural Healing methods as possible!
I hope we can make a difference here in America – I hope America will once again be the country that other countries look up to and admire- Let’s make it a good, healthy and skinny impression
To be skinny and healthy is not as easy as you think = especially if you have fed your body with tons of bad stuff for the last couple years. One of the reasons your body refuses to lose weight and to keep it off is that it is malnourished. You might eat the right amount of calories but what you stuff your face with doesn’t help your body to transport and digest the food you eat.
If you want to be skinny again you have to remember one thing ! DRINK Water!!! The best is about 8-10 8 oz glasses a day. Speaking of water we will know take a closer look at the Four Basic Nutrients.
And yes, water is one of the 4 basic nutrients!
WATER Two thirds of our body is actually water and it is involved in every function of our body – it helps transport waste products and nutrients out and in to our body. As a female you know how painful UTI’s are and trust me if you drink enough water you will be able to keep this horrible pain away.
CARBOHYDRATES aka carbs supply the body with energy. I am very carb sensitive so for me the less carbs the better but it really depends on your body and blood type (you can learn more about my diet program in my monthly newsletter). Carbs come in two different forms “simple” and “complex”. Simple carbs you will find in foods like table sugar, white flour, candy, cake, biscuits, cereal and of course soda. However fruits also have lots of simple carbs in them but they are ok if you want to lose weight if you are eating them in moderation – I prefer apples, prunes, apricot, plums, strawberries, oranges. But that is just me.
Complex carbs are mostly rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals and they are mostly found in veggies for example spinach, broccoli, lentils, milk, yams and many more. Complex carbs have a higher nutritional value than simple carbs. If you are confused on what simple and complex carbs are just keep in mind fresh is always better and veggies help you to lose weight faster than fruits.
PROTEIN this is my oil for my engine! It gives me the most energy and I am way less tired, have more fun working out and do not get cramps when I run. Lucky me most of my favorite foods contain protein. You will find it in meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese and beans! Soy is also a good source for this gem… unfortunately most soy products are GMO and as you know – I prefer to not consume any GMO food when dieting.
FATS Believe it or not but fat is actually the most concentrated form of energy! We divide fat into three different groups. Saturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids.
Saturated fats you will find most likely in whole milk, cream, cheese, beef, lamb and pork.
Polyunsaturated fatty acids are found in corn, soybean and sunflower oils and some fish oils.
Monounsaturated fatty acids are found in veggie and nut oils.
How many of these nutrients you need really depends on your body. Some bodies need more carbs and function better on carbs I on the other hand need more protein if I want to be skinny. As mentioned before I will discuss this in my monthly newsletter.
The answer is NOES - he US and Canadian Government does not allow products to be labeled 100% Organic if the products contain GMO Foods. Again you need to pay really close attention to the label! But hey by now you should be used to it .
So if you see a product that says 100% Organic it cannot contain any GMO Foods.
Certified Organic USDA Organic needs to be 95% GMO free but the remaining 5 % must be approved and on the USDA National List.
Made with Organic means that almost 30% of the ingredients can be GMO. This is not what we want in our food! So watch out for that!
But don’t forget – Some farmers cannot afford the labels that guarantee you GMO-Free food out of this necessity a group of farmers created Certified Naturally Grown CNG. Check out their website to see if there is a farm close by that will deliver healthy food to you that makes you skinny on top of the super good nutrients.
So just keep an eye out for the 100% Organic Label and you should be fine!
You might have started hearing the term Superfoods popping up left and right and secretly thought – What the heck are those magical foods?
The term Superfood usually describes fruits and vegetables with a high nutritious content. Superfoods are actually the foods that we already know are healthy – my guess is that some people are just trying to make them sound more appealing – but that is just my guess.
So Superfood or not; our diet should always consist of berries, nuts, seeds, veggies with intense colors and fatty fish.
I have tried several diets and I have come up with a mix between a couple of diets that help me to lose weight and also to not regain all the lost weight. There is nothing worse than buying a new pair of pants only not to fit into them a couple months later. The list below is a general list and some of the fruits and/or veggies I do not use in my own personal daily diet but you might like them and would include them in your own diet.
BEANS AND LENTILS
LEGUMES ( Peanuts, Lentils, Beans, Raw Cocoa)
LOW-FAT YOGURT AND KEFIR
In this blog post I want to talk more about GMO short for Genetically Manipulated Organism. It always surprises me how little people know about GMO, but honestly I never thought much about it either. Well I didn’t have to worry, because in Europe the nicknamed “Frankencrops” are mostly labeled as such. Producers are in general obliged to list all GMO ingredients on the packaging. Restaurant owners are also required to list any GMO ingredient on their menu. Most shocking to me is that even China labels their genetically engineered food. So how come that our advanced society does not see a need to label Frankensteins food?
In the EU groceries cannot have the slightest evidence of GMO soy or corn. However there are allowed GMO plants if they originate from a non EU country. The biggest problem the EU faces are animals that are fed with GMO food or products that come from countries that allow GMO ingredients.
But what exactly is GMO? It is an organism that’s DNA has been artificially altered. It can either be a plant or even live stock. The actual term is transgenic but you might also hear GE which stands for genetically engineered. There are GMO crops that actually produce pesticides on their own in their tissue. You cannot tell me that this is healthy and safe for us to eat!?
Another scary study conducted by Judy Carman and several scientists proves that pigs which eat GMO crop have developed severe inflammation to their digestive systems. Why am I talking about pigs? Pigs have a similar digestive system as we do and since we all love our bacon those sick pigs end up in our food chain as well. MHMMM Yumm.
Which foods contain GMO mostly?
- Sugar Beets
- Zucchini and Yellow Squash
- Animal Products due to the consumption of the GMO feed that stock is possibly fed
How can you make sure that you do not purchase GMO food?
- Look for the Non-GMO Project label this ensures that Frankstein didn’t have his hands in the production
- Plant your own garden
- If possible have a couple chickens and make sure you feed them non GMO feed
- Buy organic local foods
- Avoid restaurants and processed foods try to cook as much as possible
- Try to find co-op that delivers food to you
- See if you have an organisation called Bountiful Baskets in your area. You will have to volunteer but at least you know you will have healthy food on your table
- Go to Farmers Market’s in your town
It will not be easy to reverse your shopping habits and you will also be frustrated that you cannot eat your favorite chocolate bar anymore. But there are other options – HEALTHIER options. Yes you will spend a bit more money but that money spent is well invested in your future health!
